If you want a chicken that takes egg laying seriously, the Leghorn is hard to beat!

Originally developed from chickens from Italy, Leghorns have become one of the best-known laying breeds in the world. They’re light-bodied, active birds and are especially famous for producing plenty of white eggs.

🥚 Eggs: White, usually medium to large

🍳 Laying: Excellent — often around 250–300 eggs a year in good conditions

🐔Temperament: Active, alert and independent

🌿Best known for: Fantastic egg production and being brilliant foragers

Leghorns are usually busy birds that love exploring, scratching around and looking for food. They’re generally not aggressive, but they can be a little more flighty and less cuddly than calmer breeds such as Silkies or Sussex.

They’re also surprisingly economical birds. Their smaller body size means they don’t need as much feed as some larger breeds, while still producing an impressive number of eggs.

Leghorn hens aren’t particularly well known for going broody, which is actually useful if your main aim is to keep the eggs coming rather than hatch chicks.

One thing to watch is their large comb, particularly on the common White Leghorn. In very cold weather the comb can be more vulnerable to frostbite.

Interesting fact: The name Leghorn comes from the English name once used for the Italian port city of Livorno, where chickens of this type were exported from during the 1800s.

A brilliant choice if you want an active, productive hen that spends more time laying eggs than sitting around looking pretty!
